GRIP IT IN THE PALM
The grip is crucial to getting this shot right. Instead of gripping the club down toward the fingers as in the full swing, the rule is to place it more in your palm. A regular putting grip can be useful here. This helps keep wrist action to a minimum and prevents you from trying to scoop the ball into the air. Like the mini pitch, this shot is propelled by turning the chest toward the target. If you have the proper setup, the club will make a slight downward strike on the ball. I recommend using two clubs for chipping — a 9-iron for short shots and a 7-iron for longer ones. Get the ball on the green quickly so it rolls toward the hole like a putt.
